Okay, well in my case, maybe not destroyed...yet! My son has a pillow that he uses to sleep. I have washed it several times and have tried having another one made as a back up. Well, the extra wasn't "the same" and he rejected it. It has now become his sister's pillow. Well, today I washed his pillow again and it came out of the washer with a hole! Needless to say, I am in PANIC mode. I went online to try and find the same fabric, but I couldn't. :/ I found three that look similar, so I ordered them and I'm crossing my fingers that he'll accept at least one of them. I'm really hoping he does, and if he does, I plan on buying a lot more for back up!
It's always good practice, I've found, to have at least one extra of your child's favorite items. You just never know when you're going to lose, break, or have something just fall apart on you, so I figure it's better to be safe than sorry and get an extra. If you're lucky, you'll never need the extra items and you can use them with another child or give away to someone else.
I learned that the hard way early on. My son would ONLY take the pacifier they gave him at the hospital that you seem to only be able to find at the hospital. By the time I found others, it was too late and he just knew which was his. It was difficult when it was bed or nap time and we had to turn the house upside down to find the ONE pacifier he would take. I'm just glad his sister hasn't been that way yet.
I'm really hoping the new fabrics will be to his liking, and if not, then I'm simply going to have to wean. Let him spend the day with his new pillow and sleep with his old. Little by little, push him to use his new pillow to sleep and hopefully that will do the trick.
